In 1948 Aurora Marin arrives with her family at the convent of the Canossian Sisters of Schio, Italy, where Sister Bakhita has just died. Aurora was hoping to see her before she died. She gathers her children around the picture of Bakhita and tells them of the incredible life of the woman that had raised her as her nanny.

Born in a village in Sudan, kidnapped by slavers, often beaten and abused, and later sold to Federico Marin, a Venetian merchant, Bakhita then came to Italy and became the nanny servant of Federico's daughter, Aurora, who had lost her mother at birth. She is treated as an outcast by the peasants and the other servants due to her black skin and African background, but Bakhita is kind and generous to others. Bakhita gradually comes closer to God with the help of the kind village priest, and embraces the Catholic faith.

She requests to join the order of Canossian sisters, but Marin doesn't want to give her up as his servant, treating her almost as his property. This leads to a moving court case that raised an uproar which impacts Bakhita's freedom and ultimate decision to become a nun. Pope John Paul II declared her a saint in the year 2000. Directed by Giacamo Campiotti (St. Giuseppe Moscati, Doctor Zhivago) and stars Fatou Kine Boye, Stefania Rocca, Fabio Sartor, Ettore Bassi, and Francesco Salvi.   Watch the movie trailer here!

As Torres uncovers more about his father's past, he learns dark secrets that will change his world forever. Inspired by actual events and featuring Geraldine Chaplin and Olga Kurylenko, There Be Dragons is a "rousing epic" and a "stirring vision of virtue" (Colin Covert, Star Tribune).

PARISH LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER BOOKS:

Fr. Antoninus Wall, O.P

THE JOURNEY TO GOD “Fr. Tony” spent 6 days with Sacred Heart parish in Red Bluff in September to deliver a parish mission we will all remember. Here is his book that is both profound and simple. It is written just the way he spoke to us about our journey to God, how to deal with human suffering, and becoming aware of God’s presence without and within our very souls.

THE PRACTICE OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD

by Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection, OCD

Brother Lawrence was a man of humble beginnings

who discovered the greatest secret of living in the

kingdom of God on earth. It is the art of “practicing

the presence of God" in one single act that does not

end. He often stated that it is God who paints

Himself in the depths of our soul. We must merely

open our hearts to receive Him and His loving

presence. For nearly 300 years this unparalleled

classic has given both blessing and instruction to

those who can be content with nothing less than

knowing God in all His majesty and feeling His loving

presence throughout each simple day.

DIVINE INTIMACY by Fr. Gabriel of St Mary Magdalen, O.C.D.

These 4 volumes of meditations are classic and are seeped in Carmelite spirituality. For every day it offers 2 meditations, to follow the liturgical year, that enable the soul to enter the conscious presence of God and reflect on the theme of the day.  Here we are at the very heart of prayer, which is a heart-to-heart encounter in faith with the living God. A FAVORITE QUOTE: “God’s will is also marked out for me by the circumstances of my life, whether important or not, down to the smallest detail, health or sickness, poverty or wealth, aridity or interior consolation, success or failure, misfortunes, losses, and struggles. From time to time, God asks me to fulfill special tasks of charity, patience, activity, or renouncement, detachment, submission, generosity, sacrifice. But everything is permitted by God, all is ordered by Him for my sanctification, ‘To them that love God, all things work together unto good’ (Rom8:28); everything is a grace!”

Reason to Believe:  A Personal Story

January 1, 2007

by Ron Tesoriero    A statue weeps and bleeds in the same city where Katya Rivas writes, without pause, profound teachings that she says are dictated by Jesus. Elsewhere, a consecrated Host changes to living flesh. Are these claims true? What does science have to say? This is a fascinating journey of Australian lawyer, Ron Tesoriero, in pursuit of answers. On the way he invites well-known and highly respected journalist Mike Willesee to join him. What they discover will confront the minds and hearts of readers everywhere, regardless of their previous belief systems.

Susan Conroy  searched the world over to find a copy of the book that most influenced the life of St. Therese of Lisieux.  Susan  found the only copy, and it was in French, in the monastery where Fr. Donald Kinney, OCD lives in San Jose, CA.  He sent it to her, and she began the translation of it into English.  Note that Fr. Donald Kinney was the one who was the celebrant at our first reception Ceremonies Mass in Red Bluff in 2012.  (See Secular Carmelites page on this website.)  The book is THE END OF THE PRESENT WORLD AND THE MYSTERIES OF THE FUTURE LIFE by Fr. Charles Arminjon who lived in 19th century France.  He was the Bishop Fulton Sheen of Europe at that time,

very famous preacher.  Susan Conroy speaks about how the book influenced Therese and how Mother Teresa of Calcutta influenced Susan as they were close friends for many years.  She is really on fire with the love of her Lord.

Sherry Weddell, author of "Forming Intentional Disciples", speaks to Ralph Martin on "Choices We Face" (EWTN) about her apostolate that is evangelizing Catholics all over the world.  How to gain a personal relationship with Christ, to be ignited on fire with the power of the Holy Spirit is what she tries to communicate to Catholics in the pews.  Our Bishop Jaime Soto has given her powerful book to every priest in our diocese to read and is putting on a workshop for Catholics to be held in Sacramento in October.  Read more >>
